INTRODUCTION The use of economizers in data centers may represent a large potential for savings in energy and reduction of [CO.sub.2] emissions. Recent publications suggest Data Centers constitute approximately 1.5% of total U.S. energy consumption. In addition, they also represent one of the fastest growing industry sectors, suggesting they need to be a significant focus of the future energy policy of the world. As such, the United States DOE & select groups within ASHRAE have pushed for the inclusion of prescriptive requirements for both types of economizers within ASHRAE Standard 90.1. Concurrently, there have been several new publications related to potential pitfalls over the application of economizers within datacom facilities due to the following items:
